Why we believe that Jesus was born Dec. 25?
The Bible makes no mention of the birthday of Jesus, I heard other arguments of researchers trying to determine the actual date of birth. Why December 25th so widely accepted? I am a complete atheist, but I Christian background, and I wondered what.
Strong Cyclopaedia M'Clintock and said: "The celebration of Christmas does not go divine, nor is N [ew] T origin [facility]. The day of the birth of Christ can not be deduced from the N [ew] T [domain], or, any other source. "- (New York, 1871), vol. II, p. 276. Luke 2:8-11 shows that the shepherds were in the fields at night when Jesus was born. The book Daily Life in the time Jesus said, "Flocks … spent the winter under cover, and that alone may be regarded as the traditional date of Christmas in winter it is unlikely to be right, because the Bible says that shepherds were in the area. "- (New York, 1962), Henri Daniel-Rops, P. 228 Encyclopedia Americana informs us:. "The reason for establishing December 25, Christmas is somewhat obscure, but usually takes place the day he was chosen to correspond to pagan festivals that took at the time of the winter solstice, when days begin to lengthen, to celebrate the "rebirth the sun…. The Roman Saturnalia (a festival dedicated to Saturn, the god of agriculture, and the renewed power of the sun), also conducted at that time, and some Christmas customs are thought to be anchored to this ancient pagan celebration. "-.. (1977), vol 6, p. 666 The New Catholic Encyclopedia acknowledges: "The date of Christ's birth is not known. The Gospels indicate neither the day nor the month. . . Under the assumption proposed by H. Usener. . . and accepted by most scholars today, the birth of Christ was assigned to the winter solstice date (December 25 in the Julian calendar, January 6 Egyptian) because on that day when the sun began its return to northern skies, the pagan devotees Mitra celebrated the dies natalis Solis Invicti (birth of the invincible sun). 25 December 274, Aurelian had proclaimed the sun-god principal patron of the empire and a temple dedicated to him in the Champ de Mars. Christmas home at a time when the worship of the sun was particularly strong at Rome. "-. (1967), Volume III, p. 656.
